Hurghada is considered the pioneer and center of Egyptian tourism. A small fishing village that experienced a real boom in tourism in the 1970s. Hurghada today has about 360,000 inhabitants and stretches along 50km of coastline, from El Gouna in the north to Soma Bay and Makadi Bay in the south. The city of Hurghada itself is about 500km south of Cairo and consists of 3 parts, El Dahar (the old part), Sakala (the newer part) and Memsha (the modern part). Due to the wealth of flora and fauna of the Red Sea as well as the multitude of modern hotel complexes, Hurghada is also called the pearl of the Egyptian coast.
